There was a knock at the door, it was my good friend and neighbor. She was wearing two oversized, black paper jump suits that were issued to her in county jail. She’d been locked up for nineteen days for doing drugs in front of her young son. She was at the tail end of a nine month downward spiral that would eventually wind up with her death in a halfway house. There were thoughts that she was murdered because some of her personal belongings were distributed throughout the adjoining units, but the police really don’t care all that much to investigate the death of an older woman who was addicted to meth.
Shocked as I was happy to see her, I let her in. We had some coffee and talked about her time in county jail. She asked about her the apartment next door. The landlord tossed her out and changed the locks while she had been in jail. So she jimmied open a window and crawled inside where she found some of her cloths to change into. I asked her if I could have the paper jump suits because they’d make great make-shift canvases. I knew the perfect piece I could make out of them, “ Fuck Zuck / Facebook Jail.” I think about her all the time. She taught me so much about life and people. I know this is a piece of art I’m making available however it’s not one I’m even sure I want to part with.
